Everything Vintage: Hair and Headwear through the decades

Vintage Friday

1920's

The 20's is my favourite era in history! I'm sure not everyone lived like a Fitzerald character did back then, but that's what I picture when I think about the 1920's.

The cloche hat was the epitome of flapper sophistication.

The "bob" was the iconic hairstyle of the era.

The Blunt Bob

The Wavy Bob

Headbands with sequins and feathers were also popular during this era. Bands were worn across the forhead and if the woman had bangs it would be placed over top of them.

1930's

The 1930's brought back a more feminine look - curves replaced the masculine lines of the 20's. Slightly longer waves came back in style and the hats were worn at a flirty tilt.

1940's
Hats became a little smaller and largely took inspiration from the military. Feathers, corsages, netting and veils provided a sophisticated feminine finish.
1940's hairstyles were ultra femine and elegant. They were elaborately planned with with curls and updos.

1950's
Perfectly primed curls was the hair trend of the 1950's. And headscarves were the practical and stylish way to keep those perfect curls in place.

The "Poodle" was famously worn by Lucille Ball

Jackie Kennedy was a style icon of the 50's and 60's.

1960's
Pompadours and bouffants and beehives were the styles in the 60's. Backcomb, backcomb, and then backcomb some more. Hair was high and Mod was in. Small, round pill box hats that sat at the crown of the head were also all the rage.

1970's
Farrah Fawcett was the one who made the feathered look a style statement in the 70's. Wildly flowing, natural hair was also a style choice with the 70's flower children. Women would also go to great lengths to get a long and straight look - since flatirons didn't exist back then they would actually IRON their hair using a clothes iron!

1980's
Haha I just had to use this picture! It says it all! Frost, perm, tease, hairspray...

1990's
And of course the Jennifer Aniston cut was how almost everyone wore their hair in the 90's (unless you were grunge). I had this hairstyle and I LOVED it! In fact, I want it to make a comeback! Since 80's is back in this season maybe that will mean the Jennifer cut will be back again soon???

Happy Friday!!!!

  1. Love the 30`s and 40`s looks. And that last picture of Jennifer Aniston sure brings back memories. There was this special young girl who adored her hair style so much that she just had to have it ;)
